This past Saturday, I attended the annual Art From The Streets sale. I've long wanted to attend, but for some reason or the other, never have made it to the show. This year was different. Not only did I come home with four wonderful works of art by some very talented individuals, but I also may have found the vlounteer opportunity I have been looking for.
Art From The Streets is a program that encourages and allows the homeless to come to a safe place twice a week to create art. You all know how deeply I believe in the healing powers of creativity; be it painting, photography, jewelry making, composing music, etc. I had such a wonderful time at this show and so enjoyed visiting with the four artists of who's work I purchased. With the exception of a small fee for mounting the art, all proceeds from the sale of their art goes directly to the artist. Some have been so successful at selling their art, that they have been able to get off the streets, and some even have found work. How freakin fantastic is that!!
Here's what I brought home to grace my walls. Pretty awesome stuff I think.
These first two are by a man named Larry Williams. Such a sweet soul of a man. Loved his attitude, his art and him. He had so so many works I wanted, but I limited it to two. Each of these were listed for $50. What a deal!
June painted this one. A sweet lady who is now off the streets. She must have had a hundred or more of these beautiful abstract paintings in her booth. And, people were grabbing them up like crazy. I was actually lucky to get this one. I didn't dare set it down for second to look through the rest or it too would have been snatched up away from me.
And this sort of rock n' roll album cover looking piece was painted by Jason. He was extremely shy and didn't say much but smiled very happily when I told him I loved it and was going to take it home and hang it on my wall.
If, where you live, there is an Art From The Streets program, I think you should go to their show. You will not be disappointed and the experience of meeting these people, who are not that much different than you and I, will make your heart sing.

What an absolutely wonderful thing!!! It's icing on the cake that you can now volunteer there. It so rewarding when you can help someone achieve their true potential.
That is a very cool idea. You picked up some very nice artwork from very talented people.
What fantastic art! Thanks for sharing.
That is so wonderful! I would love to find a program like that up here in North Texas.
I have a personal reason for loving this post. I was feeling very discouraged today and then I read this. I can't remember if I have ever posted about my "dream", but this is it - to do exactly what is being done where you are. I wondered if this was going on anywhere else in the United States because I had no idea how to get my dream going - there is so much to consider. Well, thanks to you, I now have a model to take a peek at. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us - the art you purchased is beautiful!
What a terrific program and I love your choices! How awesome is that!!
Terrific blog post! :-)

Oh--this is awesome! Beautiful pieces and great opportunity. I'm going to go online and see if there is anything like that in Wisconsin. Isn't it amazing that everyone has creativity inside them?!
