 Cactus in oak tree.  Pretty high up. I'm standing on a bridge for this picture. Wow, the first Friday of the new year.  The weather here in Austin is so amazing.  Sunshine and warm breezes.  I wish our summers where like this.   I did it.  I went out Saturday morning, bought a live Leland Cypress and made it our Christmas tree.  I think it turned out great.  Colored lights and a mix of ornament styles and colors, makes for a pretty sweet tree.  My tree topper wouldn't stay upright on the delicate top branch of the tree, so I used my glitter peace sign ornament at the top.  Actually, quite fitting for me and my belief

Back from my trip out to far west Texas. These pictures were taken on a morning hike in the Davis Mountains.  It has been many years since I've been back in this part of Texas, and I'd forgotten just how beautiful it is.  If you ever get the chance, go!  The towns are small, but the landscape is vast.  We stayed in Ft. I'm a little all over the place in the studio this week.  The above is a collection I'm working on of 12x12 abstract "word" paintings.  I can't decide if I want to add more to these, or leave them as they are.  Usually I make the words less obvious, but I sort like the idea of making these words stand out and be the focus of the painting.  What do you guys think? Sometimes you begin a painting with a clear vision of how you want it to come out in the end.  And sometimes, you don't even get close to that vision.  This is the case with the painting (now a mixed media piece) below.  Today, it is far different than I originally intended.  I am still working on it and have a sneaky suspicion it is going to go through many more phases before I call it done.

Happy Saturday Everyone!  I don't usually post to the blog on the weekends, but in honor of AEDM, I will be doing so. This morning I headed out from Austin to Wimberely, Texas.  It is a short 45 minute drive from where I live.  I went to Market Days there which is held the first Saturday of each month March through December.  I got there early and was glad I did.  Boy did the place fill by noon.

I paint my own papers for use in my artwork.  It is something that I enjoy very much.  On days when I want to be in the studio creating, but don't really want to get down and dirty painting, I make paper.  In some ways, making these sheets becomes the inspiration for new works of art. It is a cycle of creating that works well for me...ever keeping me excited and enthusiastic about my art.

I don't art journal per se, but I do create art in my sketchbook/journal.  Mostly studies for future works I might want to paint on canvas or in collage.  I'm learning to take this book with me on travels and to appointments where I might have to wait a while.  I'm trying to get better at spontaneous art making.  This is hard for me.  Ask anyone who knows me well...I am not a spontaneous person.

From this design sketch... to this.   Let me tell you something people, make sure you get yourself the best darn carpenter you can when having custom built-ins made and installed in your home.  Our guy is simply the best.  From my initial design, together we made a few changes here and there to suit the client's needs,  and here is the finished product.  Not yet painted, but already perfect.

One my favorite things to do is to make my own paper designs for my collage work.  I don't actually make the paper itself, but I take fine handmade papers in white, and paint them up with acrylics creating colorful designs to use in my art.   This serves two purposes: 1) I don't have to worry about copyright issues from using other people's paper designs, and 2) I get to create just the right mix

I started a new series of paintings this week.  Dots.  These are small, 8x8 inches, and are acrylic on wood.  The images on the right are the close-ups of each painting.  When I ordered the 8x8 panels, I wasn't sure what I would use them for, but knew I wanted a smaller surface to paint on so that I could explore techniques and ideas without committing to large scale works of art.  Well.....this

Feeling Moody Acrylic on wood panel I've discovered that if I don't get at least a little creative time each day, it makes me cranky. I'm jonesing to start my next design project. One of these is in bloom almost everyday in my pond. When I first started the koi pond I never dreamed it would be so easy to get these lotus (lily) flowers to bloom. Between admin duties for our business and other mundane daily life chores, I've been in the studio painting. I should be looking for interior design clients, but after helping my husband with a prospective new remodel job, my every free moment has been lost in creating art. I think part of my reason for retreating to the studio and creating, is since I don't have a client that I'm designing for

Every chance I get, I'm up in my studio, or the "art room" as it is so affectionately called around our house. I'm crazy in love with painting abstracts right now. So much freedom and quick results. Just what I need these days. Both paintings are acrylic on canvas. The top is titled Content, and the bottom is titled, Agitated - Just A Little.
